Dorchester is annexed by Boston.

January 3, 1870

Massachusetts legislature approves the annexation. It is undertaken after the city of Boston made plans to build its sewage outfall pipe in Dorchester and after real estate developers saw an opportunity to promote residential development. The annexation adds 5,600 acres to Boston and moves Dorchester from Norfolk County to Suffolk County.
